NEWBERRY - For the first time since the 2009 Food Lion SAC Tournament, the Newberry men's tennis team defeated the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters, as Newberry eased to a 5-0 win at Newberry High School.
Doubles play saw Newberry's (7-5, 4-2 SAC) No. 1 pair of seniors Michael Saunders (Christchurch, New Zealand) and Vinicius Botelho (Fortaleza, Brazil) cruise to an 8-2 win over LMU's (2-6, 0-4 SAC) Will Sparks and Marcelo Alvim.
Sophomore Fernando Espana (Madrid, Spain) and junior Carlos Nicolopulos (Valencia, Venezuela) earned an 8-5 victory at No. 2, while senior David Sons (Lexington, S.C.) and redshirt-junior Mohammed Chakir (Rabat, Morocco) edged out a 9-7 win at No. 3.
Singles play produced only two victors as the match was halted upon Newberry scoring its fifth team point to earn the victory.
At No. 1 it took only two sets for Saunders to top Sparks, while Botelho earned a 6-0 set victory before his opponent retired due to injury in the second set to give the Brazilian a victory.
