Botelho earns singles victory in 6-1 loss to Blue Hose

CLINTON - Newberry senior Vinicius Botelho battled to a three-set victory at No. 1 singles to earn Newberry's lone victory in a 6-1 loss to the Presbyterian Blue Hose at the Templeton Tennis Courts.

Newberry (6-5) fell behind after doubles as the Blue Hose (18-3) swept to earn the single doubles point as the two sides played by Division I rules.

The Wolves' closest match in doubles play came at No. 2 as junior Carlos Nicolopulos (Valencia, Venezuela) and sophomore Fernando Espana (Madrid, Spain) fell 8-5.

Newberry's one bright spot on the afternoon was Botelho (Fortaleza, Brazil) at No. 1 singles. After earning a 6-2 victory in the first set, Botelho dropped a tight 7-5 decision in the second set to Rafael Berghaus. The tiebreaker went Botelho's way by a score of 10-3.

The Wolves hit the Cannon Tennis Courts on Tuesday for a 2 p.m. scheduled first serve against the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters.
