Opitz' long putt on final hole give Wolves team victory at Butler's Benbow Invitational

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Freshman Sophia Opitz drained a 30-foot putt on the tournament's final hole to put the finishing touches on a one-stroke victory for the Newberry Wolves in Butler University's Benbow Invitational at the Jacksonville Beach Golf Club on Tuesday.

Newberry earns its first tournament championship of the 2013-14 season as the only non-Division I team in the 11-team field. Opitz' putt wrapped up Newberry's 316 on the day, the lowest round of the event by eight strokes.

The Wolves' Tuesday round wrapped up a 649, beating Monday leader Cleveland State's 650.

Opitz (Landskrona, Sweden) was Newberry's top finisher in a tie for third place with a 14-over par 158 after a 76 on Tuesday. The Benbow event is Opitz' first-ever top five finish.

Marianna Monaco (Yonkers, N.Y.) matched her classmate's 76 on Tuesday, finishing in a tie for seventh with a 17-over par 161. Eline Askeland (Oslo, Norway) tied for 15th with a 22-over par 166, Korey Coleman (Stanford, Ky.) tied for 17th with a 23-over par 167 and Annabelle Dallery (Sumter, S.C.) tied for 26th with a 26-over par 170.

Newberry was the only team with all five of its players inside the top 40 in the standings, much less the top 30.

The Wolves have one more event prior to the conference tournament, playing in the United States Women's Golf Invitational at Pine Island Golf Course in Charlotte, N.C., on April 7-8
