Nicolopulos earns decisive victory in Wolves' 5-4 win over Brevard

NEWBERRY - Newberry junior Carlos Nicolopulos earned a huge singles victory on Tuesday afternoon as the Venezuelan clinched Newberry's 5-4 victory over the visiting Brevard Tornados at the Cannon Tennis Courts.

Nicolopulos (Valencia, Venezuela) and sophomore doubles partner Fernando Espana (Madrid, Spain) earned an 8-2 win for Newberry (5-4, 3-2 SAC) over Brevard's (0-11, 0-1 SAC) Christoph Plasa and Guilherme Prophirio at No. 2 doubles.

No. 1 doubles saw a large margin of victory as well, with senior Vinicius Botelho (Fortaleza, Brazil) and redshirt-junior Mohammed Chakir (Rabat, Morocco) toppling David Taggart and Rory Northam. Seniors David Sons (Lexington, S.C.) and Jeffery Kiser (Newberry, S.C.) picked up an 8-6 win over George Finch and Nathan Sabate at No. 3 doubles.

Singles proved tough for the Wolves with the first singles victory for the Wolves coming at No. 2 as Espana defeated Northam in straight sets.

Brevard looked to control singles play with victories at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5. With two matches remaining and one Newberry victory set to clinch the match, Nicolopulos played hero with a three-set victory over Plasa to clinch the match for the Wolves.

Newberry travels to Due West on Thursday for a 2:30 p.m. regional match at Erskine.
