Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEWBERRY - The Newberry softball team cruised to a pair of run-rule victories on Sunday as the Wolves swept a doubleheader Davis & Elkins at the Smith Road Complex.

Senior Danielle Basch (Muskegon, Mich.) drove in six runs on the day, but none proved more important than the two she knocked in on a walk-off single to centerfield in the bottom of the fifth inning in game two.

Newberry improves to 6-1 on the season, while Davis & Elkins drop to 0-4.

The Wolves hit the road on Tuesday for a doubleheader at Erskine, scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.

Game One: Newberry 13, Davis & Elkins 2
[Box Score]

A pair of Wolves finished game one 2-2 as sophomore Darrian Jamison (Versailles, Ky.) and freshman Hailey Drawe (Oceanside, Calif.) finished with two hits each, while Jamison drove in four runs in the first game of the day.

After giving up a run to the Senators in the first inning, the Wolves answered as Basch drew a one-out walk. After a pop fly gave the Davis & Elkins defense two outs, Basch stole second and scored on a single to left by Jamison.

The Wolves tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the second when senior Leah Hosking (Williamston, Mich.) walked and advanced to second on a ground out. With two outs, senior Katie Capobianco (Coconut Creek, Fla.) and junior Ashlen Ayres (Kennewick, Wash.) drew walks to load the bases. With the bases loaded and two outs another walk pushed a Newberry run across and placed Basch on first. The final run of the inning came as junior Gabby Bedard (Winder, Ga.) singled through the right side to plate Capobianco.

Newberry's offense exploded in the bottom of the third when Jamison led off the inning with a walk. Jamsion was subbed out as sophomore Katelyn Rearden (Trenton, S.C.) entered the game as a pinch runner. Rearden promptly stole second, before advancing to third on a bunt single by Drawe. Sophomore Casey Nellums (Duluth, Ga.) picked up her RBI of the season as a sacrifice fly plated Rearden and allowed Drawe to advance to third.

Hosking drew a walk and stole second, as Drawe took advantage of a throwing error to score and Hosking scampered to third. A triple to right center by freshman Mallory Gerndt (Burke, Va.) scored Hosking, while four-straight walks scored Gerndt and Capobianco. With the bases loaded Jamison returned to the lineup and tripled to right to clear the bases. Jamison scored soon after reaching third on a single through the left side by Drawe.

The fourth inning saw Newberry plate a final run as Gerndt scored on a bases loaded walk. The Senators plated one run in the top of the fifth as the Wolves secured a game one victory.

Junior Madison Burnett (Pickens, S.C.) picked up the win in the circle, while striking out three in four innings.

Game Two: Newberry 9, Davis & Elkins 1
[Box Score]

Capobianco notched two hits as the Wolves exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to top the Senators 9-1 in game two at the Smith Road Complex.

Newberry plated two in the second inning as freshman Madison Tepfenhart (York, S.C.) drew a leadoff walk before advancing to second on a two-out single by senior Paige Brugh (Indian Land, S.C.). An infield single by sophomore Amelia Putnam (Mansfield, Ga.) pushed both runners ahead a base, before a Capobianco single plated Tepfenhart and Brugh scored on a Basch single to center.

Davis & Elkins plated one run in the fifth, while Newberry closed the game out in the bottom of the frame. A bunt single and stolen base saw Capobianco reach second with no outs. After a ground out by Basch, Bedard tripled to right to score Capobianco. Bedard soon scored on a Jamison double before Ayres drew a pinch hit walk. Ayres and pinch runner Rearden executed a double steal to put runners on second and third with one out.

Drawe reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases for pinch hitter Gerndt. With two strikes, Gerndt singled to center to score Rearden. A fielding error allowed Brugh to reach first and saw both Drawe and Ayres cross the plate.

Putnam drew a walk, which bumped Brugh over to second. With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Basch singled to center to score Gerndt and Brugh. Basch's single gave Newberry an eight-run advantage, which ended the game in five innings.

Junior Brittany Middleton (Lizella, Ga.) struck out two and gave up only one run in a five-inning victory to move to 4-0 on the season.
