ANDERSON, S.C. - The Newberry men's tennis team fell in its conference opener 6-3 at Anderson on Saturday afternoon.
Newberry (1-1, 0-1 SAC) dropped a pair of doubles matches, before picking up a team point at No. 2 doubles. At No. 2 sophomore Fernando Espana (Madrid, Spain) and junior Carlos Nicolopulos (Valencia, Venezuela) earned an 8-5 win over Anderson (1-1, 1-0 SAC) duo Paul Michael Calhoun and Danillo Faria.
Singles play saw Newberry get off to a quick start as senior Michael Saunders (Christchurch, New Zealand) cruised in his first set against Juan Carracedo before securing a three-set victory at No. 1 singles.
Senior Vinicius Botelho (Fortaleza, Brazil) needed three sets, but opened his conference schedule with a victory over Mateo Rivas.
No. 3 and No. 4 singles needed three sets each, but saw Anderson come out on top as the Trojans pulled out the 6-3 win at the Max Grubbs Memorial Courts.
The Wolves return to the Cannon Tennis Courts tomorrow afternoon with a 1 p.m. scheduled start against the visiting Belmont Abbey Crusaders.
