NEWBERRY - Senior Vinicius Botelho won the 100th match of his collegiate career on Thursday afternoon at the Cannon Tennis Courts as the Newberry men's tennis team defeated Lenoir-Rhyne 8-1.
The Wolves (4-4, 2-2 SAC) took an early lead over the visiting Bears (2-4, 0-1 SAC) with a pair of victories in doubles play. Botelho (Fortaleza, Brazil) and senior Michael Saunders (Christchurch, New Zealand) clinched an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles, earning the Botelho career win number 99.
At No. 2 doubles, sophomore Fernando Espana (Madrid, Spain) and junior Carlos Nicolopulos (Valencia, Venezuela) notched an 8-3 victory over Filip Dobrosavljevic and Killian Symalla.
Singles play saw Saunders notch a pair of 6-2 set victories to defeat Robin Hochguertel at No. 1. The second singles match saw Botelho pick-up his 100th career victory as he topped Symalla at No. 2 in straight sets.
Espana matched Saunders by winning two 6-2 sets to topple Hunter Pack at No. 3 singles.
The Wolves continued strong singles play as junior Mohammed Chakir (Rabat, Morocco), cruised to a two-set victory over John Christian Reid.
Nicolopulos battled after dropping set two at No. 5 singles, to win in three sets over Dobrosavljevic. The Wolves wrapped up its sweep of singles play as senior David Sons (Lexington, S.C.) won in three sets over Matthew Ledford.
Newberry next sees action on March 11 at home against Brevard, with a scheduled 2 p.m. first serve.
