Botelho lone winner in Wolves' 8-1 loss at No. 20 GRU Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. - The Newberry men's tennis team ran into a buzzsaw on Thursday afternoon at the Newman Tennis Center as the No. 20 GRU Augusta Jaguars cruised to an 8-1 win over the Wolves, despite a two-set victory by senior Vinicius Botelho over a regionally ranked opponent.

The Wolves (2-3) fell behind the Jaguars (4-0) in doubles play, dropping decisions at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The spotlight match of doubles play came at No. 1 where Botelho (Fortaleza, Brazil) and senior partner Michael Saunders (Christchurch, New Zealand) forced a tiebreaker before dropping the match to national No. 7 pair Victor Cabellos and Victor Guimaraes.

Newberry's lone victory in singles play came at No. 2 at Botelho topped Cabellos in straight sets. Cabellos is currently ranked No. 10 in the Southeast Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

The Wolves are back in action on Saturday at 12:30 p.m., when Carson-Newman travels to Newberry for a South Atlantic Conference match.
