Newberry cruises past Pioneers, 5-1

Box Score

GREENVILLE, Tenn. – The Newberry women’s soccer team went on the road and tied their highest offensive output of the season as they picked up a 5-1 victory at Tusculum in their final regular season matchup.

Sarah Sager (Saugus, Calif.) led the way for Newberry as she put in two goals. Casey Wesley (Saugus, Calif.) added her first goal of the season as they also got goals from Brayden Miller (Lyman, S.C.) and Gabrielle Brodie (Rolleston, Canterbury, New Zealand). It was the most goals scored for Newberry since a 5-3 victory over Alabama-Huntsville in the first game of the season.

The Wolves (10-3-3, 8-2-1) jumped right on the Pioneers as Sager opened the scoring in the 3rd minute of the contest. She chipped a cheating Tusculum keeper from the left side of the field from about 12 yards out.

Casey Wesley (Saugus, Calif.) doubled the score seven minutes later as she received a ball from Valeria Newcomb (San Diego, Calif.) and took shot to the far left post for her first goal of the season.

Tusculum got back into the game as they were awarded a penalty kick with six minutes left in the half. Olivia Kilgore took the shot and hit it past a diving Alexis Carrillo (La Puente, Calif.) who dove the right way and got her hands on it but couldn’t keep it out of the back of the net.

Sager put Newberry in control for good as she scored her second goal of the match just 10 minutes into the second half. The Wolves stole the ball at midfield and Sager dribbled in one the keeper and calmly finished to the left post to make it 3-1.

Miller added her third goal of the season in the 69th minute as Brodie played a through ball to Miller who finished past the Tusculum keeper. Brodie would pile on the scoring and give it the final 5-1 advantage with just over two minutes left as Jessica Will ( , ) had a shot saved by the keeper and Brodie was there to clean it up.

The Wolves outshot the Pioneers 25-14 for the game with Brodie leading the way with 6 shots. Carrillo made 5 saves and Newberry limited Tusculum to 6 shots on goal.

Newberry will be back in action in the first round of the SAC tournament on Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 at the Smith Road Complex. The Wolves opponent will not be known until tomorrow after all games have concluded.
