Box Score HICKORY, N.C. - Returning for her junior season after being named First Team All-Southeast Region a year ago, Gabrielle Brodie picked up where she left off as she netted the game winning goal in Newberry's 1-0 victory over Pfeiffer in the L-R Classic.
Newberry (1-0) saw Pfeiffer (0-1) go on the offensive early as the Wolves defense blocked a Falcons shot in the third minute, before sophomore goalkeeper Rebecca Darley (Wolcott, Conn.) recorded her first save of the season in the fifth minute.
The Wolves quickly turned the momentum around as senior Ashley Reetz (Charleston, S.C.) hit the post in the seventh minute and junior Brayden Miller (Lyman, S.C.) saw her ninth minute attempt turned away. Newberry looked to push the attack the remainder of the first period as the Wolves were whistled offside six times in the opening half.
The second period saw the Wolves pepper the Pfeiffer goal with shots as Newberry took five shots in the opening ten minutes of the second half.
It was not until the 62nd minute that the Wolves saw the attack pay off as Brodie (Rolleston, Canterbury, New Zealand) broke through down the left side of the pitch before beating the keeper for her first goal of the 2013 campaign.
Newberry fought to fend off the Falcons in the late stages of the match, before an 88th minute save by Darley secured victory for the Wolves.
Four newcomers found a place in Newberry's starting 11, as junior Sabrina Serafin (Northridge, Calif.), junior Breanna Naranjo (Oxnard, Calif.), junior Sarah Sager (Saugus, Calif.) and junior Rachael Jonas (Camarillo, Calif.) earned starts.
Brodie's goal was her 16th career goal, putting the junior in a tie for sixth most goals all-time at Newberry with Adriana Farfan.
Darley tallied six saves as she kept her third career clean sheet.
Newberry continues play in the L-R Classic on Sunday at noon when the Wolves take on Lees-McRae.
