Loveridge wins twice as Wolves drop 5-4 decision to Pioneers

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - Newberry senior Cal Loveridge picked up a pair of victories as the Wolves fell 5-4 to the Tusculum Pioneers on Sunday at the Nichols Tennis Complex.

Newberry (12-8, 5-4 SAC) earned the lead after doubles play as No. 1 duo of juniors Michael Saunders (Christchurch, New Zealand) and Vinicius Botelho (Fortaleza, Brazil) edged Lukas Winkelmann and Nicolas Planchard 8-6. The Wolves' No. 2 pair of Loveridge (Derby, Derbyshire, England) and sophomore Carlos Nicolopulos (Valencia, Venezuela) toppled Jonas Winkelmann and John Taylor 8-4.

Singles play proved a tight contest as Tusculum earned victories at the top half of the lineup. Freshman Fernando Espana (Madrid, Spain) kept Newberry in the match with a two-set victory over Paul Wiederspahn.
Loveridge knotted the team match up at 4-4, as he came back from a set down to top John Taylor in three sets. The Wolves saw the Pioneers snatch away victory with a win at No. 6 singles.

Newberry's 5-4 conference record is the first winning season in conference play for Newberry since the 2008-09 season. Newberry has also clinched a spot in the Food Lion SAC Tournament, and will play along side the women's team in tournament play for the first time since the 2007-08 season. The qualification of both teams to the SAC Tournament is the first for Newberry since the tournament was restructured to require teams to qualify.

The Wolves return to the Cannon Tennis Courts on Wednesday as Newberry hosts No. 32 North Georgia at 2 p.m.
