NEWBERRY - Freshman Fernando Espana continued his strong freshman season as he picked up victories in doubles and singles action as the Wolves skated past conference foe Mars Hill 8-1 at the Cannon Tennis Courts.
Newberry (12-7, 4-3 SAC) swept the Lions (2-8, 1-4 SAC) in doubles play, as junior David Sons (Lexington, S.C.) teamed with Espana (Madrid, Spain) for a win over Sam Lee and Zach High at No. 3. The No. 2 spot saw sophomore Carlos Nicolopulos (Valencia, Venezuela) and senior Cal Loveridge (Derby, Derbyshire, England) notch an 8-4 win over Michael Melvill and Joel Sturgis.
The Wolves' final doubles point came in a tie-break battle at No. 1 as juniors Michael Saunders (Christchurch, New Zealand) and Vinicius Botelho (Fortaleza, Brazil) edged Lucas Simm and Euquerio Guerrero.
Singles play saw all five Newberry winners earn victories in straight sets as Botelho toppled Guerrero at No. 2 singles. Nicolopulos cruised to victory over Melvill in two sets, while Espana edged Lee in two sets after winning a tight second set. Loveridge dropped only three games to High at No. 5, while Sons earned a convincing win over Sturgis at No. 6.
The Wolves travel to Tusculum tomorrow for a 1 p.m. showdown with the Tusculum Pioneers, as the Wolves wrap up the SAC schedule in Greeneville, Tenn.
