Espana shines in Wolves' 5-3 loss to LMU

ROCK HILL - Newberry freshman Fernando Espana picked up victories at No. 3 doubles and No. 4 singles as the Wolves fell 5-3 to the No. 4-seed Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters at the Rock Hill Tennis Center in the quarterfinals of the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championships.

The Wolves (13-10) fell behind LMU (12-5) in doubles play, as the Railsplitters earned victories at No. 1 and No. 2. Newberry's lone doubles point came at No. 3 where Espana (Madrid, Spain) and junior David Sons (Lexington, S.C.) edged Gabriel Martins and Michael Koenan 8-6.

Singles play saw the Wolves earn its first singles point at No. 2 singles as junior Vinicius Botelho (Fortaleza, Brazil) topped Will Sparks in straight sets. With the Wolves trailing 4-2, Espana kept the Wolves in the match as he topped Alexey Minevskiy at No. 4 singles in straight sets.

The Wolves saw their season end at No. 6 singles, before junior Michael Saunders (Christchurch, New Zealand) was able to finish his marathon match at No. 1 singles with Philipp Hoffman.

Newberry wraps up the 2012-13 season with an overall record of 13-10.
