NEWBERRY - In a marathon match, Newberry senior Cal Loveridge clinched an upset victory over No. 32 North Georgia by the Newberry men's tennis team as the Wolves topped the Saints 5-4 at the Cannon Tennis Courts.
Newberry (13-8) leaped out to a pair of victories in doubles action over the Saints (9-9) as Loveridge (Derby, Derbyshire, England) and sophomore Carlos Nicolopulos (Valencia, Venezuela) secured a 9-7 win over Giovani Santos and
Sam Gantt. No. 3 doubles saw junior David Sons (Lexington, S.C.) and freshman Fernando Espana (Madrid, Spain) picked up an 8-4 win over Matheus Pineda and Andy McMaster.
Junior Vinicius Botelho (Fortaleza, Brazil) cruised to victory at No. 2 singles as he picked up a two-set win over Matheus Guida. Espana continued the Wolves' winning ways as he dropped only three games in his two-set victory over Gantt.
The Wolves final point came as Loveridge battled from a set down to force a third set at No. 5 singles. Loveridge found himself down at the start of the third set, but battled to a 7-3 tiebreak victory.
Newberry plays host to South Carolina State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
