Wolves cruise to 8-1 road victory over Tornados

BREVARD, N.C. - The Newberry men's tennis team carried momentum from a trio of doubles victories into singles play as the Wolves skated to an 8-1 win over Brevard on Wednesday afternoon at the McCoy Tennis Complex.

Newberry (10-7, 3-3 SAC) started the afternoon against Brevard (2-11, 0-3 SAC) with three doubles victories. The Wolves' first doubles win came at No. 1 as juniors Michael Saunders (Christchurch, New Zealand) and Vinicius Botelho (Fortaleza, Brazil) edged Johnannes Kloster and David Taggart in an 8-5 decision.

At No. 2 doubles senior Cal Loveridge (Derby, Derbyshire, England) and sophomore Carlos Nicolopulos (Valencia, Venezuela) notched an 8-1, while at No. 3 freshman Fernando Espana (Madrid, Spain) and junior David Sons (Lexington, S.C.) worked their way to an 8-2 win over Richie Liell and Stefano Giovanolli.

Singles action resulted in five team points for Newberry, starting with a two-set win for Saunders over Kloster at No. 1. Nicolopulos edged Northam in a tightly contested two-set win at No. 3, while Espana picked up a convincing two-set victory at No. 4.

Loveridge was perfect at No. 5 singles as Giovanolli was unable to pick up a single game against the Englishman. Newberry's final singles point came as junior Jeffery Kiser (Newberry, S.C.) dropped only one game in a two-set win over Liell.

The Wolves return home on April 3 for a 2 p.m. match at the Cannon Tennis Courts against Catawba.
