Botelho earns 13th straight victory as Wolves top Eagles 8-1

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Newberry junior Vinicius Botelho won his 13th straight singles match as he helped lead the Wolves to an 8-1 victory over the Carson-Newman Eagles on Saturday at the Carson-Newman Tennis Complex.

The Wolves (8-7, 1-3 SAC) swept doubles play against the Eagles (2-9, 0-5) starting with an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles by freshman Fernando Espana (Madrid, Spain) and junior David Sons (Lexington, S.C.). The second point for Newberry came at No. 1 doubles where juniors Michael Saunders (Christchurch, New Zealand) and Botelho (Fortaleza, Brazil) picked up an 8-1 win over Juan Sebastian Perez and Austin Mackay.

Newberry's final doubles point came as sophomore Carlos Nicolopulos (Valencia, Venezuela) and senior Cal Loveridge (Derby, Derbyshire, England) edged Paul Birdsong and Derek Holdway 8-6 in a close match at No. 2.

Espana was one of two Newberry players to win their singles match without dropping a single game as he earned the Wolves their first singles point at No. 3. Newberry clinched the match at No. 2 singles as Botelho extended his unbeaten streak to 13-matches with a two-set win over Birdsong.

Loveridge cruised to victory at No. 4 singles as he was perfect in his win over Mackay without surrendering a single game. The Wolves' final team point came at No. 6 singles where junior Jeffery Kiser (Newberry, S.C.) notched a win in straight sets over Dalton Moore.

The Wolves are set to play host to SAC foes Lenoir-Rhyne on Monday at the Cannon Tennis Courts with the first matches scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
