Newberry drops 5-4 heartbreaker at Lincoln Memorial

HARROGATE, Tenn. - The Newberry men's tennis team lost a close match at the LMU Tennis Complex on Friday as the Wolves fell 5-4 to the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters.

Doubles play saw the Wolves (7-7, 0-3 SAC) earn only one point as the No. 3 pair of junior David Sons (Lexington, S.C.) and freshman Fernando Espana (Madrid, Spain) notched an 8-5 win over LMU's (7-3, 4-0) Michael Koenen and Gabriel Martins.

Singles action got underway with a Newberry victory at No. 2 as junior Vinicius Botelho (Fortaleza, Brazil) edged Will Sparks in two sets. Espana also earned a singles victory at No. 4 as the Spaniard cruised to a straight sets victory over Alexey Minevskiy.

The Wolves' final team point came at No. 5 singles when senior Cal Loveridge (Derby, Derbyshire, England) notched a victory in three sets over Gabriel Martins.

Newberry continues its Tennessee swing tomorrow at 11 a.m., as the Wolves visit Carson-Newman.
