NEWBERRY - For the first time at home the Newberry men's tennis team earned a victory during the 2013 season as the Wolves grounded the Erskine Flying Fleet in an 8-1 victory at the Cannon Tennis Courts.
Newberry (2-3) dominated doubles action against Erskine (0-3) with the only true test coming at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3 junior Jeffery Kiser and freshman Fernando Espana earned an 8-3 win, while at No. 1 juniors Michael Saunders and Vinicius Botelho picked up an 8-1 victory. The toughest match took place at No. 2 as senior Cal Loveridge and sophomore Carlos Nicolopulos edged out their opponents for an 8-6 win.
Singles action was controlled by the Wolves as well with the lone loss coming at No. 6 singles.
Four Wolves picked up straight set victories, while Nicolopulos battled back after dropping the second set to pick up a victory in the third set. At No. 1, Saunders escaped set one before comfortably winning set two 6-3. The remainder of the Wolves' singles matches ended in 6-2, 6-2 results as Botelho picked up a win at No. 2, Espana at No. 4 and Loveridge at No. 5 also earned wins.
Newberry travels to Spartanburg on Friday for a 2 p.m. showdown against Division I opponent, Wofford.
