BELMONT, N.C. - The Newberry men's tennis team earned its first victory of the season at the Sacred Heart Courts with a 7-2 victor over Belmont Abbey on Sunday afternoon.
Newberry (1-2) skated through two of its doubles matches with the No. 3 pairing of David Sons (Lexington, S.C.) and Jeffery Kiser (Newberry, S.C.) picking up an 8-1 win, while at No. 1 Vinicius Botelho (Fortaleza, Brazil) and Fernando Espana earned an 8-4 victory. The toughest doubles match came at No. 2 where Cal Loveridge (Derby, Derbyshire, England) and Carlos Nicolopulos (Valencia, Venezuela) topped their opponents with an 8-6 victory.
Singles action saw the Wolves pick up four team points after dropping matches at No. 2 and No. 6 singles.
Vinicius Botelho picked up a strong victory at No. 1 singles in straight sets, while Espana and Loveridge each picked up straight set victories at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Newberry's final singles point came at No. 5 singles where Sons won a tight three set victory over Rodrigo Alatore.
Newberry will play its first home match of the season on Tuesday as North Georgia comes to Newberry for a 2 p.m. showdown.
