GREENWOOD - The Newberry men's tennis team fell 8-1 in the spring opener against No. 8 Lander at Cabri Courts on Friday afternoon, with the lone bright spot coming at No. 1 doubles where first team preseason All-SAC double pair of Vinicius Botelho and Michael Saunders earned a huge upset victory.
Newberry (0-2) fell in a pair of doubles matches 8-2, before in a back-and-forth battle Saunders (Christchurch, New Zealand) and Botelho (Fortaleza, Brazil) upset the No. 21 doubles team in the country with a 9-7 victory over August Iwdal and Adam Jonsson. The Lander (1-0) pairing is also ranked No. 6 in the region.
Lander controlled singles action from the top of the lineup down to the bottom, as only Newberry junior David Sons (Lexington, S.C.) managed to win a set against his opponent. Sons fell in three sets at No. 6 singles.
The Wolves return to the road on February 10 for a trip to Belmont, N.C. to take on the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey.
