Wolves fall in five to Queens despite double-double for Parrish

NEWBERRY - Wolves' senior Samantha Parrish and junior Jessica King led Newberry with 11 kills each as the Wolves fell in five sets to the visiting Royals of Queens University of Charlotte.

Queens topped the Wolves 25-18, 15-25, 25-20, 20-25, 16-14, to improve to 16-10 overall and 14-8 in conference. The Wolves fall to 18-11 overall and 12-10 in SAC action. Newberry will next see action in the 2013 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Championships held at Newberry College beginning on Nov. 22.

Newberry fell behind early as Queens went on multiple runs in the early portion of the opening set to see themselves atop the Wolves for the remainder of the set. Queens outhit Newberry in the first set .370-.133.

The Wolves answered back in the second set as Newberry opened with two straight points and never looked back. The Wolves were paced in the second set by the trio of sophomore Alexus Horton (Austin, Texas) and juniors Amanda Soper (Simi Valley, Calif.) and King (Los Angeles, Calif.), all of whom recorded three kills in the second set.

Set three went the way of the Royals, before the two sides entered a tight fourth set. Newberry quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead, before the Royals answered with five straight points to make the set 5-3 in favor of Queens. A kill by King set off a three point Newberry swing to pull the Wolves within a point of the Royals.

Queens however jumped back into the set with a trio of points of its own. The Wolves and Royals exchanged points until Newberry took advantage of a bad set by Queens' Taylor Riley. The bad set from Riley gave the Wolves a point and control of the serve trailing 9-8.

A Queens error and back-to-back aces from senior Chelsea Mayor put the Wolves up 11-9 before the Royals called a timeout. Queens again answered to tie the match 15-15, before Newberry took the lead back on a kill from freshman Logan Hayward (Sylvania, Ohio) and ran to the end of the set with the lead for a 25-20 set victory.

Set four looked like it was going to go Newberry's way as the Wolves sprinted ahead to a 14-9 lead over the Royals. Queens responded to the 14-9 deficit with seven straight points to escape Eleazer Arena with a 16-14 set win to take the match 3-2.

King and Parrish finished the day with 11 kills each, while Parrish added 13 digs. Sophomore Rachel Moran (Cypress, Texas) recorded 21 assists, while Mayor added 19 of her own. In addition to her 11 kills, King notched 10 total blocks, including nine block assists.
