WINGATE, N.C. - The Newberry softball team fell in a pair of South Atlantic Conference games at the Wingate Softball Complex on Saturday, falling 5-0 in game one and 6-2 in game two to the Wingate University Bulldogs.

The Wolves fall to 14-15 on the season and 0-8 in SAC action. Newberry returns to action on Monday when the Wolves travel for a doubleheader at USC Beaufort.

Game One: Wingate 5, Newberry 0
Newberry junior Brittany Phillips (Pacolet, S.C.) led the Wolves with a two-hit performance in the opening game loss to the Bulldogs.

Newberry freshman Caitlyn Smith (Palm Harbor, Fla.) and junior Shelley Jeffcoat (Lexington, S.C.) combined for a two walk performance in the circle for the Wolves in Saturday's opener.

Game Two: Wingate 6, Newberry 2
Sophomore Shelby Holland (Charlotte, N.C.) led Newberry with two hits and two RBI in game two, as the Bulldogs finished out a sweep of the Wolves with a 6-2 victory.

Newberry opened the final game of Saturday's doubleheader with an early run, as Phillips led the game off reaching safely on a Wingate error. After moving to second on a sacrifice bunt, Phillips was plated on a RBI single through the left side by Holland for the Wolves' first run of the day.

After surrendering two runs in the bottom of the frame, Newberry would score again in the third inning when Phillips again reached on an error with two outs in the inning. Wingate's third error of the game put Phillips on third and sophomore Jennifer Yancey (Dunwoody, Ga.) on first. A passed ball pushed Yancey to second, before Phillips would score on a Holland single through the left side.

Wingate added cushion to its lead in the bottom of the third with a three run inning, before adding a sixth and final run in the sixth inning.
