NEWBERRY, S.C. - For the second time in the 2012 spring season the Newberry men's tennis team toppled the Benedict Tigers as the Wolves topped the Tigers 8-1 on Sunday afternoon at the Cannon Tennis Courts.
Earning default victories at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles, the Wolves opened the day up 2-0 before a single serve was struck. Newberry kicked off the match with an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles by sophomore tandem Michael Saunders (Christchurch, New Zealand) and Vinicius Botelho (Fortaleza, Brazil).
The Wolves took a 4-0 lead when at No. 2 doubles sophomore David Sons (Lexington, S.C.) and freshman Carlos Nicolopulos (Valencia, Venezuela) cruised to an 8-1 win.
The Wolves strong play continued at No. 2 singles where Botelho handled Shane Latchman in straight sets, as did Saunders at No. 1 with opponent Zibusiso Ndamande.
Newberry earned a fourth singles point when junior Cal Loveridge (Derby, Derbyshire, England) took down Giovanni Plater in straight sets.
The Wolves eighth and final point of the match came at No. 5 singles where sophomore James Bethea (Newberry, S.C.) came back from being down a set to earn a three set victory in his first singles match of the season.
Earlier in the day the Wolves swept Spartanburg Methodist in an exhibition match.
Newberry is scheduled to hit the road on Wednesday when the Wolves travel to Hartsville, S.C. for a 3:30 p.m. meeting with the Coker Cobras.
