Saunders, Botelho earn victories in 6-3 loss to Saints

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Sophomore Michael Saunders improved to a team high 4-1 at No. 1 singles as the Wolves' comeback against North Georgia fell short as the Saints edged Newberry 6-3 at the Cannon Tennis Courts.

Newberry (2-3) fell behind North Georgia (3-1) with losses at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, but it was Saunders (Christchurch, New Zealand) and fellow sophomore Vinicius Botelho (Fortaleza, Brazil) who kept the Wolves from being shutout in singles action. In a tightly contested doubles match, the pairing of Saunders and Botelho earned a 9-8 victory at No. 1 doubles.

In singles action Saunders and Botelho earned the Wolves only wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively.

Saunders topped Felipe Freidrich with a 7-6 (4) comeback victory in set one, before downing the Saints No. 1 by a score of 6-1. At No. 2 singles, Botelho cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win in straight sets over Rodrigo Magan.

The Newberry men are off until Saturday, when the Wolves play host to Limestone at 1 p.m.
