Box Score MISENHEIMER, N.C. - In her collegiate debut. freshman Mary Stanton (Greenville, S.C.) scored the game winner as the Newberry Wolves (1-0-0) topped the Pfeiffer Falcons (0-1-0), 1-0.
The Wolves were unable to capitalize on a good chance in the first half when freshman Gabrielle Brodie (Rolleston, Canterbury, New Zealand) missed the frame on a one-on-one opportunity against the goalkeeper.
Newberry took advantage of a counter opportunity late in the second half when junior Cassie Smith (Spartanburg, S.C.) sent a through ball over the top of the Pfeiffer defense allowing for Stanton to run onto the ball and chip the keeper for her first collegiate goal.
With 20 seconds remaining, the Falcons threatened when Newberry goalkeeper Emily Rhodes (Buckley, Wash.) was left one-on-one. The Pfeiffer shot darted toward the goal line before defender Katie Sas (Columbia, S.C.) cleared the shot away from the goalmouth to help secure the clean sheet.
Newberry held the advantage on offense taking 17 shots in the match compared to six by Pfeiffer.
Rhoades' clean sheet was the second straight clean sheet for the Wolves against Pfeiffer, and the 18th clean sheet in Rhoades' career.
Newberry returns home for a fixture with USC Aiken at 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 4.
