Woolard fights off Carvalho at No. 4 singles to give Wolves 5-4 win over Tusculum

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - Michael Woolard (Lexington, S.C.) scored his third win of the season with a 1-6, 7-6, 7-5 victory in his No. 4 singles bout against Gui Carvalho to help the Wolves improve to 3-5 in South Atlantic Conference play with a 5-4 victory over Tusculum College.

The Wolves are now 2-3 in matches decided by one point with their other victory coming in their SAC contest against Catawba at the Cannon Courts back on March 3.

Newberry started off on a positive note as Vinicius Botelho (Fortaleza, Brazil) and David Sons (Lexington, S.C.) left little in doubt with an 8-1 victory against Luis Zamora and Carvalho.

Michael Saunders (Christchurch, New Zealand) and Mohammed Chakir (Rabat, Morocco) were the competitors in the No. 2 singles flight which proved to be one of the most competitive of the afternoon. Tony Bujana and Steven Lin battled fiercely with the Newberry duo and the match had to be settled with an extra game. Unfortunately, the Pioneer pair came out with a 9-8 victory to even the score.

Jeffery Kiser (Newberry, S.C.) and James Bethea (Newberry, S.C.) could not give the lead back to Newberry in their No. 3 singles flight as they dropped an 8-5 decision to Drew Kiser and Sam Groeneveld.

The Wolves came out firing on all cylinders in the singles flights as Saunders set the tone with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Bujana which tied the match at 2-all.

Botelho kept the momentum going for the pack with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Zamora before Chakir kept the Wolves' singles record untarnished on the day with a 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 triumph over Lin.

After Woolard sealed the match for Newberry, Drew Kiser took the No. 5 flight over Jeffrey Kiser by a 6-2, 6-1 tally before Groeneveld picked up a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Sons to conclude the match.

With the victory, the Wolves jumped to sixth in the SAC standings and will travel to Jefferson City, Tenn., to face Carson-Newman tomorrow, April 11. The Eagles and Wolves are set to begin their match at 10 a.m.
