Newberry blanked, 9-0, by Saints

DAHLONEGA, Ga. - After rolling past Belmont Abbey in their previous outing, the Newberry men's netters were unable to rediscover their offensive prowess, falling 9-0 to North Georgia.

The doubles matches were particularly unkind to Newberry. Vinicius Botelho (Fortaleza, Brazil) and Michael Woolard (Lexington, S.C.) were on the losing end against the North Georgia duo of Brandon Sloan and Felipe Friedrich, 8-1.

Looking to extend their doubles win streak to four, Michael Saunders (Christchurch, New Zealand) and Mohammed Chakir (Rabat, Morocco) took the court against Adrien Saulais and Mateus Camasmie. Their winning streak would come to an end though, due to an 8-3 setback.

The pair of Jeffery Kiser (Newberry, S.C.) and James Bethea (Newberry, S.C.) fell to Giovani Santos and Ernesto Farinas 8-2 to finish up the doubles portion of the match.

In singles action, Saunders fell in a hard fought match, 6-4, 6-3 to Friedrick. Botelho took Camasmie to a tiebreaker in the second set, but would up losing the tiebreaker 7-2 and the match 6-4, 7-6. Chakir looked to have Saulais on the ropes after a 6-2 victory in the first set, but the Saint would rally back to take a 2-6, 6-4, 10-7 victory in the No. 3 singles bout.

Jeffrey Kiser (Lexington, S.C.) lost a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Sloan and Woolard dropped his No. 5 singles match to Farinas 6-1, 6-1.

David Sons (Lexington, S.C.) won his first set against Andy McMaster 6-4, but could not keep his offense going, falling 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the final singles match.

Newberry will look to rebound as they return to South Carolina to participate in another road match. The Wolves travel to Limestone College to take on another team of Saints on Friday. The action is set to get going at 2 p.m.
