NEWBERRY, S.C. - A trio of Wolves posted impressive numbers in their Newberry debuts, but it was a returning player in Keisha Henderson that helped secure the Wolves a 67-65 season opening victory over the visiting Mount Olive Trojans.
Making their debuts for the Wolves (1-0), freshman Haylee Lepaio (Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia), junior Neicey Lewis (Riverdale, Ga.) and junior Kendra Brown (Swansea, S.C.) all scored in double figures in the season opener.
Lepaio led all scorers with 25 points and shared the team high for rebounds with seven. A transfer from Mercer, Lewis posted 16 points and seven rebounds, while Brown tallied 13 points and five rebounds in her first game at Newberry after sitting out a redshirt season.
Lepaio made her presence felt early as the Australian post scored the opening basket, pulled down a rebound and scored a second time in the opening four minutes of the game. Lepaio gave the Wolves an early 6-4 lead, before the Trojans (0-1) even the score and began to build a lead of their own. With a little over seven minutes remaining in the first half the Wolves regained a temporary lead before the Trojans extended their lead to as many as six points before the first half came to a conclusion.
Newberry played from behind much of the second period until shortly after the Trojans took their lead nine points. After a jumper fell for Mount Olive's leading scorer Andrea Jones (22) with 14:36 remaining in the game, Newberry began its second half comeback.
The Wolves cut the deficit to one with 10:12 on the clock thanks to a pair of made free throws by Brown. The Wolves and Trojans battled back-and-forth until Lewis was fouled as her layup fell through the net. Lewis completed the three-point play knotting the game at 54-54.
Newberry regained the lead and extended it to as many as four points before Mount Olive took a two point lead with a little over a minute on the clock. With 47 seconds on the clock, Brown stole the ball from Mount Olive's Joneiqua Gary and tied the game up with a fast break layup.
With the game tied, Henderson (Columbia, S.C.) showed her veteran presence coming up with a defensive rebound before being fouled and heading to the free throw line on what was the Trojans 13th foul of the half. Henderson sank both free throws before stealing the inbounds pass from the Trojans. Henderson gave the ball to Brown who was fouled and hit one of her two free throws to give the Wolves a 67-64 lead. With 0.2 seconds on the clock Gary hit a single free throw for Mount Olive to put the final score at 67-65 in the Wolves favor.
Jones led the Trojans with 21 points, while Jasmine McDonald finished the day with a double-double thanks to her 16 points and 10 rebounds. Henderson finished the game with six points and led all players with six steals.
Newberry's victory was the sixth straight season opening victory for the Wolves. Newberry continues the 2011-12 season on Wednesday when it travels to Sumter for a 6 p.m. meeting with Morris.
