Total team effort helps Wolves upset Catawba 3-1

Box Score

NEWBERRY, S.C. - It took 18 matches, but Newberry coach David Nicholson finally got the total team effort he was looking for from the Newberry College volleyball team as the Wolves upset the Catawba Indians 3-1 (15-25, 25-18, 25-19, 26-24) at Eleazer Arena on Friday evening.

"I can't tell you how proud I am of the ladies tonight," Nicholson said. "We've been trying to get this kind of performance all season, and it couldn't have happened at a better time. We're hoping this is the start of something big for us."

Newberry was able to bounce back and take the final three sets after being dominated in set one. Sophomore Samantha Parrish (Angola, Ind.) showed why she is one of the South Atlantic Conference's best players with two thunderous kills to end the match and send Catawba packing.

"We have been so close in our matches. We just needed to get over that hump and finish a match," Parrish said. "We showed what we can do when we click and push until the end."

The Indiana native led Newberry (9-9, 2-6 SAC) with 15 kills in the match including eight in a set the Wolves badly needed to knot the match at one. Her performance tonight gives Parrish a SAC high 246 kills and increases her kills per set average to 3.42.

She didn't do it on her own though. Freshman Amanda Soper (Simi Valley, Calif.) played the best match of her season with a career high 12 kills.

"Amanda was outstanding for us tonight," Parrish said. "Her effort was unbelievable. It's great to see her have a match like this to help us win."

The California native hit a team-high .391 and caught fire in the fourth set putting five kills away in 10 attempts. Fellow freshman Lauren Prachar (Fort Wayne, Ind.) finished with 10 kills.

All the excellent play by Newberry's youngsters was aided by senior Lindsey Hollingsworth's defensive play. Hollingsworth (Charleston, S.C.) had 23 digs and took several would be kills away from the Catawba Indians.

Blair Browning (New Lexington, Ohio) and Chelsea Mayor (Sugar Land, Texas) split time setting. Browning led the Wolves with 24 assists while Mayor finished with 17.

"It was probably our best performance of the season," Nicholson said. "I'm so proud of how we battled tonight. We will need to keep up this intensity if we plan to make any noise in the conference."
