CLINTON, S.C. - The Newberry men's tennis team opened the fall season yesterday with a loss and a victory coming against Presbyterian and Pfeiffer, respectively, as it played two matches at Presbyterian.
The Wolves opened Saturday with a 5-2 loss to host Presbyterian. Newberry dropped the three doubles matches before picking up its first point in singles action.
Newberry sophomore Michael Saunders (Christchurch, New Zealand) edged PC No. 1 Grayson Mills in the first set 7-6, before dropping the second set 3-6. Saunders battled past the second set loss and picked up an 11-9 victory in the second set clinching his match.
The Wolves earned a second point in the match with Presbyterian as junior Cal Loveridge (Ashbourne, England) took a two set win over Edward Snead at No. 3 singles posting a 6-3, 7-6 victory.
Returning to action in the afternoon against Pfeiffer with Division 2 scoring, the Wolves knocked off the Falcons 6-3. Newberry picked up one point in doubles play as sophomores Mohammed Chakir (Rabat, Morocco) and David Sons (Lexington, S.C.) knocked off Luis Villalta and Mark Henry 8-6.
The Wolves took the match via strong play in singles action, which was led off by Saunders' 6-0, 6-2 win over Ben Hunter at No. 1 singles. Chakir took a three set victory at No. 2 singles over Sebastian Wernecke, while Loveridge won his second singles match of the day with a three set win over Villalta.
Carlos Nicolopulos (Valencia, Venezuela) won at No. 4 singles in three sets over Pfeiffer's Ethan Lyons, while Jeff Kisser (Newberry, S.C.) earned a two set win over Bret Williams.
