Parrish's 23 kills not enough to beat Tusculum

Box Score

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - Newberry sophomore Samantha Parrish continued her assault on the Newberry record books posting a season-high 23 kills. However, the Newberry College volleyball team fell for the sixth time in five sets losing 3-2 (22-25, 22-25, 25-17, 25-15, 19-17) to Tusculum at Pioneer arena Saturday afternoon.

The fifth set was tight the whole way, but Newberry (7-9, 1-6 SAC) couldn't finish off the Pioneers. At 16-15, Newberry had Tusculum down to match point but an attack error knotted the set at 16. Parrish (Angola, Ind.) had a kill to fight off Tusculum's first match point. Anne Staudinger's (Fort Wayne, Ind.) kill fought off the second match point, but kills by Alyssa Raterman and Natalie Gaudreau completed Tusculum's comeback.

As badly as the match finished, things started off beautifully for the Wolves. Their inside and outside attack was working during the first two sets.

Parrish dominated on the outside. The sophomore had three consecutive kills in the second set to give Newberry a 12-11 lead. Parrish finished with six kills in the set helping Newberry to a 2-0 lead.

While Parrish was busy taking care of business on the outside, freshman Madison Schultz was wreaking havoc in the middle putting away 14 balls in the match with a hitting percentage of .414.

The Wolves coasted through the first two sets and appeared on the same path during set three, but, after falling down 13-9, Tusculum turned things around in a hurry. The Pioneers outscored Newberry 15-4 to close the set cutting the Wolves' lead to 2-1.

Things looked eerily similar in set four for the Wolves. The Pioneers rattled off the first seven points and Newberry was unable to recover losing the set 25-15.

Lindsey Hollingsworth (Charleston, S.C.) had 27 digs to lead Newberry while Parrish added 21. Newberry will return to action next Wednesday with a home match against Belmont Abbey.
