Wolves fall short against Spartans 1-0

COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Newberry College women's soccer team fell short in its attempt to hold off the 2007 NCAA Division II National Champions the University of Tampa as the Wolves dropped a 1-0 decision to the Spartans during their final game of the Cougar Invitational Tournament here Sunday morning.

Newberry (0-2-0) held tight on defense for 76 minutes but gave up a late goal to Tampa (2-0-0) senior forward Luana Miessa off of a deep Marta Bertsos pass that put the game away.

After being outshot 14-1 by Columbus State on Friday night, the Wolves were once again outplayed offensively with Tampa outshooting Newberry, 15-2. Senior Amberly Fowler (Greenville, S.C.) and sophomore Cassie Smith (Lyman, S.C.) were the only two Wolves to take shots, both coming in the first half.

Goalie Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) played the full 90 minutes, saving 10 shots. Rhoades made seven of her saves in the second half and outsaved Tampa goalie Leah Cesanek 10-2.

The Wolves will play their home opener on Wednesday, Sept. 8, at 3 p.m. against Limestone.
