Box Score COLUMBUS, Ga. -The Newberry College women's soccer team opened up its 2010 season with a 4-0 loss at the hands of Columbus State University in game one of the Cougar Invitational Tournament.
Newberry (0-1-0) gave up three early goals in the first half, all within a five minute margin, to allow the Cougars to cruise to victory. Newberry managed just one shot during the contest by sophomore Amber Chase (Aiken, S.C.) late in the first half.
Columbus State (1-0-0), which came into the matchup ranked No. 12 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America preseason poll, took a total of 14 shots on goal and 13 corner kicks on the Wolves, one of which was headed in by Stephanie Lowery for the Cougars' first goal of the night.
Wolves junior goalkeeper Megan Hrenchir (Lawrence, Kan.) picked up 67 minutes worth of playing time and saved three shots during the game, both of which were over her season total marks from 2009.
After going ahead by three scores in the first period, the Cougars capitalized on an own goal coming in the 51st minute to put the game on ice.
Newberry will play its second and final game of the tournament this Sunday at 10 a.m. against 2007 NCAA Division II national champions the University of Tampa.
