Newberry falls to Mars Hill, 9-0

MARS HILL, N.C. - The Newberry College men's team dropped a South Atlantic Conference match to the Mars Hill Lions on Monday afternoon, 9-0.

Newberry moves to 2-12 overall and ends its SAC season at 0-8. Mars Hill improves to 6-9 and 4-4 in the SAC.

In singles play, Maxim Sukharev (Vilnius, Lithuania) fell to Alessandro du Besse, 6-3, 6-3, while Pavle Popovic (Belgrade, Serbia) dropped a match to Koeche Smith, 6-2, 6-4. Christian Ranguelov (Vienna, Austria) saw his impressive 10-match win streak snapped against Lucas Simm, 6-2, 6-0. In Newberry's remaining matches, Scott Busbee (Columbia, S.C.) fell to Stevan Stankovic, 6-0, 6-2, and Samuel Cartin (Irmo, S.C.) dropped a match to Bradley Bassinger, 6-0, 6-0. Newberry defaulted at the sixth flight.

In doubles action, the team of Popovic and Ranguelov lost to Smith and Simm, 8-1, and Sukharev and Busbee fell to du Besse and Stankovic, 8-3. Mars Hill earned another win after a Newberry default.

Newberry finishes the regular season portion of its schedule tomorrow on the road in Augusta, Ga., against Augusta State. The match is scheduled for 2 p.m.
