Newberry drops match to Wingate, 6-3

WINGATE, N.C. - The Newberry College men's tennis team faced the streaking Wingate Bulldogs in South Atlantic Conference competition looking for a win, but dropped the match, 6-3.

Newberry moves to 1-10 overall and 0-5 in the SAC. Wingate improves to 12-3 and 7-1 in SAC competition.

In singles play, Maxim Sukharev (Vilnius, Lithuania) won at the first flight against Bruno Pudence, 6-2, 6-1. Newberry's other singles win came from Christian Ranguelov (Vienna, Austria), who downed Braeden Patchell, 6-4, 6-2. Ranguelov picks up his ninth singles win of the season and eighth straight with the victory. In other singles matches, Lucas Mattos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) dropped a match to Andrew Owen, 6-4, 6-7, 1-0, while Pavle Popovic (Belgrade, Serbia) lost to Matthew Lichtenstein, 6-1, 6-2. Scott Busbee (Columbia, S.C.) and Samuel Cartin (Irmo, S.C.) also fell by scores of 6-0, 6-0 to Flavio Rathsam and Fernando Montemurro, respectively.

Newberry earned one win in doubles action after the team of Sukharev and Mattos took down Pudence and Rathsam, 8-6. In other doubles matches, Popovic and Ranguelov fell to Montemurro and Greg Machado, 8-5, while Busbee and Cartin lost to Lichtenstein and Owen, 8-0.

Newberry takes a week-long break from competition before heading to Mars Hill for a SAC match on Thursday, April 8. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
