Box Score 2 NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College softball team split its Wednesday afternoon doubleheader with the Brevard Tornados in South Atlantic Conference action. Newberry dominated the first game en route to a 7-0 victory but fell, 3-1, in the second.
Newberry is now 19-5 (2-2 SAC) this season while Brevard stands at 11-12 (1-1 SAC).
Amanda Huckestein (Port Charlotte, Fla.) picked up her 11th win of the season in the opener after pitching seven shutout innings and holding the Tornados to just two hits. Huckestein struck out 11 batters in the game. Offensively, Huckestein and Felicia Taylor (Venice, Fla.) each added two RBIs and Chelsea Chipoletti (Brooksville, Fla.) had an RBI as well after going 3-for-3.
Newberry struggled to produce the same offense in the second half of the doubleheader and ultimately fell, 3-1. Jessie Teague (Charlotte, N.C.) scored Newberry's only run after hitting a double down the left field line in the second inning to put Newberry on top. Brevard added runs in the third, sixth and seventh innings, however, to come away with the victory. Taylor was tagged with the loss in the game after surrendering her first runs of the 2010 season.
Game One: Newberry 7, Brevard 0 -
Box ScoreBoth teams struggled offensively in the opening innings of the first game. Newberry finally sparked its bats to life with two runs in the third inning, four in the fifth inning and one in the sixth to come away with the 7-0 win. Eight scarlet and gray hitters recorded hits and five added RBIs. Huckestein went the distance and kept Brevard to just two hits and four total base runners.
The teams combined to put just four base runners on board in the first two innings before Richelle Mirabal (Tampa, Fla.) led off the third inning with a single through the right side. Chipoletti singled as well in the ensuing at bat before Taylor doubled to left center to score both runs.
Huckestein cruised through the middle innings and retired every batter she faced in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
The scarlet and gray expanded on their lead in the fifth inning after Chipoletti led the inning off with a double down the right field line. Aissa Gatewood (North Charleston, S.C.) attempted a sacrifice bunt but beat the throw to first to put runners on first and third with no outs. Gatewood stole second base before Huckestein hit a two-RBI single to right field. Sara Powell (Ocean View, Del.) then tripled to right center field to score Huckestein from first. Powell scored on a bunt by Stephanie Blazer (Greenville, Fla.) to cap off Newberry's four-run, five-hit fifth inning.
Newberry added one more in the sixth after Chipoletti's third hit of the game scored Chelsie Hilbourn (Loris, S.C.).
Game Two: Newberry 1, Brevard 3 - Box Score
Newberry's offensive success didn't carry over to the second game. Liz Houser (Greenville, N.C.) pitched the entire game for Brevard and surrendered seven hits and three walks. Newberry scored the game's first run in the second inning but Brevard battled back to take the 3-1 victory. Newberry created opportunities to score but couldn't produce timely hits to get the runs across. The scarlet and gray stranded 10 base runners in the game.
Teague ignited Newberry in the second inning with a double down the left field line and later advanced to third on Hilbourne's infield single. Courtney Flach (Tampa, Fla.) singled to right field to deliver Teague to the plate and put Newberry on top.
Brevard responded in the top of the third after Becca Curlee (Eagle River, Alaska) doubled to left center to start the inning. Curlee advanced to third on a bunt and scored on Nicole Heusel's (Lawrenceville, Ga.) sacrifice fly.
The 1-1 tie held until the sixth inning. Chelsi Mallory (Mechanicsville, Va.) started the top of the sixth with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Sarah Carlos (Eagle River, Alaska) doubled to left-center field to score Mallory and put Brevard on top, 2-1.
Newberry looked to respond in the bottom half of the inning after Powell, Hilbourn and Flach all reached to load the bases with one out. Both of Newberry's next hitters hit the ball hard but unfortunately directly at Brevard's defenders who made the plays and prevented any damage.
Curlee led off the seventh inning with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a bunt. Heusel singled back up the middle and attempted to advance to second but was gunned down at second base by Huckestein. The throw to second allowed Curlee to score on the play, however, and put Brevard up 3-1.
Newberry put another runner on base in the bottom of the seventh but couldn't get back into the game. Taylor ended up with the loss in the game after surrendering three runs off of seven hits. The runs were the first she's allowed in 21.3 innings pitched this season.
Newberry travels to Lincoln Memorial on Saturday, March 27, to face the Railsplitters in a SAC doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
