Newberry tripped up against North Greenville, 7-2

TIGERVILLE, S.C. - The Newberry College men's tennis team took wins in singles and doubles play but fell short in a nonconference match against North Greenville, 7-2.

Newberry moves to 1-7 overall while North Greenville improves to 5-5.

Christian Ranguelov (Vienna, Austria) had a strong day for Newberry, winning in singles and doubles after knocking off Hugo Ciarrocchi in a singles match, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1. In other singles play, Pavle Popovic (Belgrade, Serbia) took a set but fell to Timur Kamilov, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, Scott Busbee (Columbia, S.C.) lost to Tomas Clark, 6-1, 6-0, and Samuel Cartin (Irmo, S.C.) dropped a match to Guilherme Ferreira, 6-0, 6-0. Jeremy Smith (Durban, South Africa) lost the first set against Sedov Innokenity, 6-4, before retiring and Lucas Mattos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) defaulted against Luis Campos.

In doubles action, the duo of Popovic and Ranguelov pulled out a thrilling win over Innokentiy and Ciarrochhi, earning a 9-8 victory after taking the tiebreaker, 7-5. Mattos and Smith almost knocked off Kamilov and Campos but fell, 8-6. The team of Cartin and Busbee dropped a match to Ferreira and Ian Harvic, 8-1.

Newberry stays on the road for its next match, a nonconference contest against Augusta State in Augusta, Ga., on Thursday, March 25. The match is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
