Newberry falls to Lincoln Memorial, 6-3

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College men's tennis team split six singles matches against Lincoln Memorial but fell behind in doubles play for a loss, 6-3.

Newberry moves to 1-6 on the year and 0-3 in South Atlantic Conference play, while Lincoln Memorial improves to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in the SAC.

Several Newberry players earned wins for the scarlet and gray in singles action. Lucas Mattos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) knocked off Bastian Guenther, 6-4, 6-4, Jeremy Smith (Durban, South Africa) took down Andras Pauko, 6-4, 6-2, and Christian Ranguelov (Vienna, Austria) won a thriller over Gabor Heredi-Szabo, 6-2, 7-6, winning the tiebreaker, 7-4. Maxim Sukharev (Vilnius, Lithuania) lost in three sets to Hannes Ganss, 6-4, 0-6, 6-4, while Pavle Popovic (Belgrade, Serbia) dropped a match to Philipp Hoffmann, 7-5, 6-1, and Scott Busbee fell to Tom Goossens, 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles play, the team of Sukharev and Mattos came up short against Goossens and Hoffmann, 8-5. Popovic and Smith lost a close match to Ganss and Guenther, 8-6, and the team of Busbee and Samuel Cartin (Irmo, S.C.) dropped a match to Zack Jones and Heredi-Szabo, 8-1.

Newberry hits the road for its next match, a non-conference contest against North Greenville on Tuesday, March 23.
