NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College men's tennis team split the six singles matches with Brevard College evenly, but the Tornados took two of the three doubles matches to claim a 5-4 win in South Atlantic Conference action at the Cannon Courts on Saturday.
Newberry is now 1-3 overall and 0-1 in SAC play, while Brevard is 1-3 overall and 1-0 in SAC action.
The first-flight doubles match was the tightest of the dual as Christian Ranguelov (Vienna, Austria) and Jeremy Smith (Durban, South Africa) dropped a heart-breaking 9-7 decision to Scott McCormick (Adelaide, Australia) and Andrew Thompson (San Antonio, Texas). In the other doubles matches, Newberry's Lucas Mattos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Maxim Sukharev (Vilnius, Lithuania) swept Jonathan Kuhn (Guatemala) and Jonathon Lavellwe (Tunnel Hill, Ga.), 8-0, and Scott Busbee (Columbia, S.C.) and Pavle Popovic (Belgrade, Serbia) were swept by Dorian Feron (Hennuyeres, Belgium) and Jarred Fisher (Prime Rose East, South Africa), 8-0.
Brevard's McCormick took the top flight singles match from Mattos (6-4, 6-4), but Newberry won at No. 2 and No. 3 as Sukharev knocked off Thompson (6-3, 6-3) and Smith took out Fisher (6-2, 6-4). BC won at No. 4 and No. 5 as Feron beat Popovic (6-0, 6-3) and Shane Apps (Alpharetta, Ga.) beat Busbee (6-0, 6-0). Newberry won the sixth flight, 6-1, 6-1, as Ranguelov beat Lavell.
Newberry returns to action next week with a pair of matches in North Carolina. The scarlet and gray will face off against Pfeiffer University at 2 p.m. Friday in Misenheimer, N.C. The next day, Newberry plays a SAC match against Catawba in Salisbury, N.C., at 2 p.m.
