Newberry drops match to Anderson, 9-0

ANDERSON, S.C. - The Newberry College men's team looked for its first road win of the season on Thursday but fell short against the Anderson Trojans, 9-0.

Newberry (1-2) gave Anderson (3-2) battles in several matches but proved unable to pull out a win.

In singles action, Lucas Mattos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) lost to Stephane Murray (6-2, 6-4); Maxim Sukharev (Vilnius, Lithuania) took a set but fell to Renato Assuncao (4-6, 6-2, 6-2); Jeremy Smith dropped a match to Stan Atema (6-3, 6-2); Pavle Popovic (Belgrade, Serbia) got off to a solid start but came up short against Deni Mehagic (5-7, 6-2, 6-1); Christian Ranguelov (Vienna, Austria) lost to John Karle (6-0, 6-4); and Scott Busbee (Columbia, S.C.) was defeated by Daniel Gonzalez (6-0, 6-0).

In doubles play, Christian Ranguelov and Jeremy Smith fell to Stan Atema and Renato Assuncao (8-2); Lucas Mattos and Maxim Sukharev lost to Stephane Murray and Daniel Gonzalez (8-2); and Scott Busbee and Pavle Popovic were bested by John Karle and Ilya Zakharov (8-3).

Newberry will kick off South Atlantic Conference competition in the squad's next match, a home contest against Brevard on Saturday, February 27. The match is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
