Newberry collects first win by shutting out Coker, 9-0

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College men's tennis team earned their first win of the season with a 9-0 statement over Coker College on Thursday afternoon.

Newberry (1-1) took advantage of dominant performances by all of its members to roll past Coker (0-3) and give head coach Felipe Sobrinho his first career coaching win.

Newberry swept the Cobras in doubles action, with Jeremy Smith (Durban, South Africa) and Christian Ranguelov (Vienna, Austria) leading off with a victory over Evan Schreiner and Rick Vliegen, 8-2. Maxim Sukharev (Vilnius, Lithuania) and Lucas Mattos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) also cruised by Juan Gonzalez and Ty Medlin for the pair's second win of the season, 8-1. Pavle Popovic (Belgrade, Serbia) and Scott Busbee (Irmo, S.C.) completed the sweep with a win over Chad Austin and Fred Estep, 8-5.

In singles play, Maxium Sukharev downed Juan Gonzalez (6-4, 6-0); Lucas Mattos knocked off Evan Schreiner (6-1, 6-0); Jeremy Smith defeated Rick Vliegen (6-0, 6-4); Pavle Popovic was dominant in a win against Ty Medlin (6-0, 6-0); Christian Ranguelov topped Fred Estep (6-0, 6-0) and Scott Busbee fought off Chad Austin for a win (7-5, 6-4).

Newberry will travel to Anderson, S.C. for the team's next contest against Anderson University on Thursday, February 25. The first match is slated to begin at 3 p.m.
