Box Score BREVARD, N.C. - In a dominating all-around match, the Newberry College volleyball team improved its record to 12-10 overall and 5-7 in the South Atlantic Conference with a 25-22, 25-21, 25-11 triumph over the Brevard Tornados.
The Wolves have swept the season series with Brevard for the fourth straight year and have not allowed the Tornados to win a set against them since the 2007 season. The win also marks the tenth victory in the all-time series which Newberry leads 10-0.
The Wolves outpaced Brevard in every statistical category allowing the Tornados to hit .000 against them - the second-lowest opponent attack percentage of the season.
The victory did not occur without the home team putting up a fight though. The match started off in favor of Brevard which used a 4-1 run to take command early. The Wolves settled in and utilized kills from Sarah Scott (Redding, Calif.), Samantha Parrish, (Angola, Ind.), Katie Davenport (Tyrone, Ga.) and a service ace from Kara Harris (Grandview, Texas) to knot things up at six.
The two squads would trade points and neither side took control until the scarlet and gray used an Anne Staudinger (Fort Wayne, Ind.) kill to take an 11-10 lead that they never relinquished. The Wolves went on a 12-6 run and with a Brevard error and a kill from the hand of Parrish were able to take a 1-0 lead. The Wolves employed an impressive .395 attack percentage to take the first set.
After trailing 1-0 in the second set, the Wolves went on a 13-2 run to take a comfortable lead in the second set. The run would feature five Tornado errors along with blocks from Harris, Parrish and Leah Nye (Hoover, Ala.). Service aces from Nadia Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and Blair Browning (New Lexington, Ohio) would round out the scoring during the decisive stretch.
The Tornados never posed a significant threat for the rest of the set, and Newberry cruised to a 2-0 lead.
Set number three opened up with a kill from Parrish and the teams would go back and forth early. With the score tied at four, the Wolves used a 13-3 run to take control of the match for good. With a 17-7 lead in the deciding set, the Wolves closed out the Tornados with a final 8-4 push. Brevard floundered through the last set, hitting a -.174 with only four kills and 10 errors.
Staudinger led the way for the Wolves with 12 kills to go along with an assist and four digs.
Harris reached double-double numbers by way of 10 kills and 11 digs. The senior also added two service aces, a pair of digs and a block assist to the final numbers.
Browning led the way in the assists category with a match-high 21 which were complimented by a service ace and three digs. Senior Brianna Blakely (Houston, Texas) added 14 helpers with eight digs and a kill in the match.
The Wolves head to Tigerville, S.C., on Wednesday to face off against the Crusaders of North Greenville. The match is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
