Box Score SALISBURY, N.C. - A game winning goal by Newberry College sophomore Ashley Reetz (Summerville, S.C.) in the 89th minute gave the Wolves the edge they needed as they took down South Atlantic Conference foe Catawba, 3-2.
The win snaps a three-game losing skid by Newberry and puts the scarlet and gray back among the leaders in the SAC. Newberry (3-9, 3-3 SAC) rallied late as they scored two second half goals en route to picking up the win.
Jesse Langdon (Raleigh, N.C.) kicked things off as she knotted the game up at two apiece with her unassisted goal in the 57th minute. Reetz then put in her third goal of the season, unassisted, in the final minute to seal the deal for the Wolves.
Catawba (5-5-2, 1-3-1 SAC) struck first with Marissa DiMarco (Voorhees, N.J.) chipping a shot over Newberry goalie Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) in the ninth minute. Wolves senior forward Christen Chestnutt (Debary, Fla.) then picked up a Reetz cross and put it in the back of the net to level the game at one in the 35th minute.
The Indians then jumped out to a 2-1 lead to end the half as Juliana Conte (Hampton, Ontario, Canada) took a DiMarco assist and turned it into her third goal of the year. The assist was DiMarco's second of the game.
The Wolves took a total of nine shots during the contest, Chestnutt accounted for three of those while Langdon and Reetz each had two. The trio also took all five of Newberry's shots on goal.
Rhoades played the first 45 minutes of the game allowing both Catawba goals with teammate Megan Hrenchir (Lawrence, Kan.) coming in the game after halftime and playing the the final period. Hrenchir recorded the only save of the night for the Wolves.
Reetz now leads the Wolves in total goals this season with three while Chestnutt and Amberly Fowler (Greenville, S.C.) are tied for second with two.
The Wolves take to the field again this Saturday, Oct. 16, in Hickory, N.C., as the scarlet and gray take on Lenoir-Rhyne.
