Box Score CHARLESTON - The Newberry College women's soccer team put up a spirited battle against its only Division I opponent this season, but the scarlet and gray came out on the losing end to the Charleston Southern Buccaneers, 3-2.
Newberry (6-2-0, 1-0-0 SAC) led Charleston Southern (6-2-0) early in the second half, but the Buccaneers rallied to hand the scarlet and gray a loss. Charleston Southern outshot Newberry 28 to 8, but Newberry held even with CSU in the corner kick count as each team had four. Newberry also committed only three fouls to Charleston Southern's 12.
Newberry found the back of the net first in the match. Jesse Langdon (Raleigh, N.C.) took a Lora Moore (Raleigh, N.C.) pass and beat Charleston Southern goalkeeper Alyssa Budros in the fourth minute to put Newberry on top early, 1-0. The goal marks Langdon's first of the season.
Charleston Southern evened the score before the half when Michelle Dennis put the Buccaneers ahead 1-1 in the 20th minute. Newberry looked for a go-ahead goal before the break but was unsuccessful, and the two teams entered halftime tied, 1-1.
The scarlet and gray wasted no time putting another goal on the board in the second half. Katie Sas (Columbia, S.C.) gave Newberry the lead when she scored 23 seconds into the stanza. Sas' goal marks the first of her collegiate career.
Unfortunately for Newberry, the team's lead would prove short-lived. Charleston Southern's Sarah Catenacci converted on a penalty kick in the 54th minute to tie the match and Caitlin Wesnesky scored from a Marky Boyce less than one minute later the to put the Buccaneers on top, 3-2. The goal would stand as the game-winner.
Goalkeeper Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) made nine saves for Newberry. Her record falls to 6-2-0 on the season.
Newberry returns home for its next match, a South Atlantic Conference tilt against Brevard College on Wednesday, September 23. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
