Newberry drop two against Limestone Saints

GAFFNEY, S.C. - The Newberry College softball team traveled to the campus of nearby Limestone College for a Southeast Region doubleheader against the Lady Saints. The scarlet and gray picked up two losses against the Lady Saints, dropping to 23-8 on the season.

Picking up the losses for Newberry were Kristen Hicks (Bamberg, S.C.) and Amanda Huckestein (Port Charlotte, Fla.). Newberry returns to action this Saturday as the scarlet and gray travel to Salisbury, N.C., for a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader with Catawba College. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. Currently, Newberry is in first place with a 4-0 record as Catawba stands at 3-3 in league play, which is good for fifth place.

Game One: Limestone 5, Newberry 1 - Box Score

Limestone led off the scoring in the first inning as they scored two runs off Huckestein to take the early lead. Felicia Fritz singled with one out and then advanced to second on a Christina Woolgar single.

The duo then stole second and third base and scored one batter later, when Jordan Goodman notched a double. The Saints added three more runs in the fourth and fifth inning as LC utilized three doubles in the two innings to take a 5-0 lead over Newberry.

Newberry scored its first run of the game in the sixth inning as Jessica Reid (Walhalla, S.C.) led off with a pinch hit single. Reid scored later in the inning as Amy Jarrell (Dover, Del.) singled to drive in Reid and cut Limestone's lead to 5-1.

The scarlet and gray were unable to mount a comeback as they fell short 5-1 in the opening game. Picking up the loss for Newberry was Huckestein, who drops to 13-3 on the year with her six innings of work. She gave up nine hits and four earned runs while striking out seven.

Game Two: Limestone 5, Newberry 4 - Box Score

Newberry started the second game off on the right foot as the guests took the fight to the home team. Aissa Gatewood (North Charleston, S.C.) earned the first hit of the game before Reid and Sarah Powell (Ocean View, Del.) loaded up the bases. Huckestein sent all runners to home plate with a first inning grand slam. It was Huckestein's third home run of the season.

Kelsey Kuykendall earned Limestone's first run of the game in the second inning with a solo homerun. After two more Limestone runs in the third inning, Kuykendall struck again with a two-run bomb to give her team a one-run lead going into the final four innings.

Newberry trailed by a single run for the remainder of the game. Despite a monster first inning, Newberry only posted four hits and managed to land on base just six times. Limestone's Kristy Witten picked up the win by striking out eight Newberry batters over six scoreless innings.

Hicks picked up the loss by allowing five earned runs and seven hits, including two home runs. Despite a rough start, Hicks still finished the game strong by holding the home team scoreless for the final three innings of the game.
