HARROGATE, Tenn. - The Newberry College men's tennis team won its final regular season road match by defeating the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters, 5-4.
After having a seven match win streak busted by Erskine, Felipe Sobrinho (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Jeremy Smith (Durban, South Africa) took the top flight doubles point by defeating Hannes Ganss and Tom Goossens (8-3). They are now 8-3 on the season.
Maxim Sukharev (Vilnius, Lithuania) and Lucas Mattos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) earned Newberry's second point of the day by taking down Gabor Heredi-Szabo and Andras Pauko (8-3). Newberry's only doubles loss came from Mark Boswell (Piedmont, S.C.) and Pavle Popovic (Belgrade, Serbia) who lost to Bastian Guenther and Zack Jones (8-3).
NC and LMU split singles play, good enough to earn the win for the scarlet and gray. In singles action, Sukharev fell to Gannss (6-1, 0-6, 6-4); Mattos fell to Guenther (7-5, 6-1); Smith took down Heredi-Szabo (6-1, 6-3); Sobrinho demolished Pauko (6-2, 6-1); Boswell lost to Goossens (6-0, 6-1); and Popovic clinched the match by defeating Jones (6-3, 6-2).
The win puts Newberry at 5-7 overall and 4-2 in the South Atlantic Conference. The scarlet and gray will return home to play Lenoir-Rhyne this Friday at 2 pm. They will finish their match against Catawba at home this Sunday at 2 pm. Newberry led the Catawba Indians, 2-1, before rain caused the singles portion of the match to be postponed. Lincoln Memorial (6-11, 1-6 in the SAC) will return to the court on Friday to play Georgetown (Ky.) at 3 pm.
