NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College men's tennis team earned its first win of the season by defeating the No. 40 Mars Hill Lions, 5-4.
Lucas Mattos picked up his second singles win of the season by defeating Koeche Smith (6-2, 6-0). Jeremy Smith and Filepe Sobrinho both earned their first singles victories of the season. In the third flight, Smith defeated Ugras Taylan Batuk (6-4, 6-2). In the fourth flight, Sobrinho took down Schafer (6-0, 6-2).
In other singles matches, Alessandro du Besse defeated Newberry's Maxim Sukharev (6-4, 6-1); Pavle Popovic lost to Tyrone La Reservee (6-2, 6-0); and Mark Boswell fell to Carlos Oyaga (6-0, 6-1).
Before splitting the singles matches, Newberry took two out of three doubles matches on way to the one point win. In the first flight, Jeremy Smith and Felipe Sobrinho defeated Batuk and Besse, 8-4. In the second flight, Sukharev and Mattos defeated Smith and Stankovic, 8-6. Newberry's only doubles loss came from Popovic and Boswell who fell to Reservee and Schafer, 8-2.
The win puts the Newberry College men's tennis team at 1-3 overall and 1-0 in the SAC. The scarlet and gray will take a week and half off before their match on Wednesday, March 18 against Augusta St at 2 pm. Next up for Mars Hill (3-2, 1-1 in the SAC) will be a road match against Limestone at 2:30 pm.
