Newberry men drop home match against No. 23 USC Aiken, 9-0

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College men's tennis team dropped its third match of the season Wednesday by losing to the No. 23 USC Aiken Pacers, 9-0.

Maxim Sukharev (Vilnius, Lithuania) and Lucas Mattos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) opened up the day with their 8-4 loss to Bruno Seves and Filipe Garcia. In the next doubles match, Jeremy Smith (Durban, South Africa) and Pavle Popovic (Belgrade, Serbia) fell to Christopher Kaetz and Gregory Andrade, 8-4.

In singles play, Sukharev fell to No. 6 Seves (6-2, 6-4); Mattos lost to No. 19 Dagoberto Darezzo (6-2, 6-0); Smith dropped a hotly contested match to Edward Horne (6-4, 7-6 (8-6)); Popovic lost to Andrade (6-3, 6-1); and Mark Boswell (Piedmont, S.C.) lost to Garcia (6-1, 6-3).

The Newberry College men's tennis team falls to 0-3 on the season. The scarlet and gray will return to action this Saturday at home in their conference opener against No. 40 Mars Hill at 1:30 pm. Next up for USC Aiken (7-2) will be a road match against Columbus St. on Thursday at 2:30 pm.
