Newberry men lose to No. 21 Augusta State, 6-3

NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Newberry College men's tennis team lost a competitive match against No. 21 Augusta State this Wednesday afternoon, 6-3.

The scarlet and gray got off on the right foot by winning the doubles matches 2-1. Jeremy Smith (Durban, South Africa) and Filipe Sobrinho (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) won their match in the first flight by defeating R. Milhati and Jenner Stevenson (8-5). The other doubles victory came from Lucas Mattos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Maxim Sukharev (Vilnius, Lithuania) who defeated Frederico Mendes and Henrique Boturao (8-5). Newberry's lone doubles loss came from Pavle Popovic (Belgrade, Serbia) and Mark Boswell (Piedmont, S.C.) who fell to Guilherme Ferraz and B. Fernandez (8-4).

Sukharev was Newberry's only player to win in both doubles and singles against the Jaguars. After dropping his first set, Sukharev came back to defeat Stevenson (3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4)).

In other singles play, Mattos fell to Fernandez (6-2, 4-6, 6-4); Smith lost to Boturao (6-3, 6-0); Sobrinho lost to Ferraz (6-4, 4-6, 6-4); Popovic fell to Milhati (6-2, 6-0); and Boswell lost to Mendes (6-1, 6-0).

The Newberry College men's tennis team now sits at 1-4 overall this year. They will return to action this Friday on the road against North Greenville at 1 pm. Next up for Augusta St. (9-5) will be a road match against USC Aiken on Tuesday, March 24.
