Newberry wins fourth straight with defeat of Pfeiffer, 1-0

Box Score

MISENHEIMER, N.C. - The Newberry College women's soccer team picked up its fourth straight victory and shut out its tenth opponent of the year after the team traveled to Pfeiffer University and defeated the Falcons, 1-0.

Newberry (12-3-1, 5-1-0 SAC) needed just one goal to top Pfeiffer (9-4-3, 6-1-2 Conference Carolinas) as goalkeeper Emily Rhoades (Buckley, Wash.) recorded her ninth shutout of the season. The clean sheet gives the sophomore Rhoades sole possession of Newberry's career record for shutouts at 14. Bobby Gainey had previously held the record with 13, set from 1996 to 1999.

Rhoades now holds the career and single-season record for shutouts, as she broke Gainey's 1996 record for shutouts in a single season when she blanked Wingate on September 26 for her then-sixth shutout.

Rhoades made five saves to shut out Pfeiffer. Her record moves to 12-3-1 on the year.

Newberry recorded eight shots to Pfeiffer's 12 but the scarlet and gray put six shots on goal while the Falcons tallied five. Ashley Reetz (Summerville, S.C.) led Newberry with four shots and three shots on goal.

Newberry struck first quickly in the match, converting on a scoring chance in the seventh minute. Ashley Reetz found Laura Mottel (North Augusta, S.C.) with a cross that Mottel deflected past Pfeiffer goalkeeper Suzie Hinman to put Newberry ahead early, 1-0.

The goal gives Laura Mottel her fifth of the year, tying the freshman with Amberly Fowler (Greenville, S.C.) and Michaela Peach (Tadcaster, N. Yorkshire, England) for the team lead.

From there, Newberry held off Pfeiffer for the remaining 83 minutes for the win. Ashley Reetz almost gave the scarlet and gray another goal when one of her shots hit the crossbar in the 17th minute, but the ball stayed out of the net.

Newberry put three shots on goal in the second half while looking for an insurance goal, but would only need Mottel's first half score. Ashley Reetz, Lora Moore (Raleigh, N.C.) and Amberly Fowler (Greenville, S.C.) launched balls that could have extended Newberry's lead but the Pfeiffer goalkeeper kept the scarlet and gray's score at one.

Emily Rhoades made four saves in the second stanza to preserve the lead and seal the shutout.

The win snaps Pfeiffer's nine-game unbeaten streak and seven-game winning streak.

Newberry returns home for its next match, a nonconference contest against Chowan University on Saturday, October 24. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
